Science Club Activities

Spring 2008

 

April 30

The club participated in the All-College Fundraiser held in the Glass Enclosed Area of the Student Center. The club collected a variety of essential items, and cash donations, needed by the Genesis Wildlife Center at Nay Aug Park in Scranton.

April 26

The club participated in a tree planting in Wilkes-Barre. The tree planting was sponsored by the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry Beautification Tree Planting Program.

Members also participated in the "Spring Into Action Park Clean Up" at Nescopeck State Park in Drums.

April 12

The club presented a science demonstration at Barnes & Noble in the Arena Hub, Wilkes-Barre. The demonstration was intended for younger audiences, but was interesting and fun for everyone. Demonstrations and exhibits included the solar system, volcanoes, vortices, insects, and deer vertebrae.

April 3

As part of the LCCC Earth Week observance, the club sponsored a presentation by Robert Hughes and Carly Trumann of the Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation. Part of the presentation included the tie-dying of t-shirts with Iron oxide, a common mine pollutant.

March 29

The club participated in a trail cleanup at Riverbend Park in Kingston. Teachers and students from the Seneca Nation Faith Keepers School in Salamanca, New York were present at the event and spoke about some of their culture and heritage. After the cleanup the participants attended a presentation by John Orlandini, author of "The Ancient Native Americans of the Wyoming Valley."

March 24

The club went on a trip to Baltimore to visit the Maryland Science Center (where "Body Worlds 2" was being displayed) and the National Aquarium in Baltimore.

February 20

The club went on a trip to Scranton. While there, members visited the  Genesis Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at Nay Aug Park and the Trolley Museum.

January 30

During a regularly scheduled club meeting, members extracted DNA from their cheek cells for the purpose of making "DNA necklaces".

 

Fall 2007

 

December 7: The club served appetizers and deserts at the United Way Luncheon held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the glass enclosed area of the Student Center. A donation of a knit hat or mittens was required to gain admittance to the luncheon. The hats and mittens were donated to a local charity.

November/December: During several meetings, the Science Club worked on the cleaning, designing, and painting of gourds to be used as birdhouses.

November 27: The Science Club planted crocus, narcissus, grape hyacinth, tulips, and glory of the snow bulbs on campus. The bulbs were donated by the National Arbor Day Foundation in recognition of the club's yearly donation.

November 26: The club's trip to Philadelphia was a success!
